Guide: facade and house insulation 2026

How thick should the insulation be?

To reach U ≤ 0.20 W/m²K on a hollow-block wall, 15 cm of graphite EPS or 15–18 cm of white EPS is usually enough. On old solid brick go for 18–20 cm. The calculator shows the wall U-value for the chosen thickness.

EPS or mineral wool?

EPS is cheaper and lighter, and graphite EPS insulates better at a smaller thickness. Mineral wool is non-combustible and vapour-open, so it is chosen for buildings over 25 m, timber walls and old masonry that must breathe.

Should windows and sills be replaced with the insulation?

Yes, if the windows are old. Replacing them after insulating damages the reveals and render. Exterior sills must be extended by the insulation thickness anyway, and insulating reveals (min. 2–3 cm) removes thermal bridges.

How does the calculator work out the facade area?

Gross area = building perimeter × (number of storeys × storey height) + two gable triangles for a gable roof (width² × tan pitch / 2). Openings are subtracted: windows × width × height plus doors. The net area drives insulation, render and paint; scaffolding is counted with a margin as (perimeter + 8 m) × (height + 1 m).

Where do the prices come from and is the result binding?

Unit rates are 2026 labour and material prices for Poland (standard), multiplied by the index of the chosen market (PL, SE, NO, DE, UA, GB) in the local currency and by the standard (economy, standard, premium). Insulation thickness and type change the price per m² and the wall U-value. The result is an estimate for talking to a contractor, not a quote – plan a 10–15 % reserve for the final price after a site visit.
